There are certain colors I just can’t get enough of. Gray is one of them. With so many different shades to choose from, gray is a color that can add anything from sophistication to edginess to your outfit. When I first came across the Miu Miu Diamond Leather Bag I didn’t think I saw anything too noteworthy. At first glance, I actually thought I was looking at a clutch. Yet, as I looked a little more, I noticed a few things. First of all, this is a handbag that can be carried as a shoulder bag which comes with an adjustable shoulder strap, or used as an oversized clutch. Then I found myself pleasantly surprised with the textured leather diamond patchwork and bows on each side. Doesn’t the handbag just look so soft? I have to say, I am definitely a huge fan of the external patchwork texture and internal satin lining combination. With many gray winter days approaching, this is definitely the kind of gray I wouldn’t mind holding on to.

As most of you know, Megs, Vlad and I have been traveling for the past couple weeks. Finally, we are all settled in South Florida and trying to get back to our normal schedules. While I was traveling, I couldn’t help but notice the plethora of laptop bags in the airport. I swear, the only travelers who didn’t have a laptop bag were those under the age of 15 (and honestly, even some of them did). So, it got me thinking about how bland most laptop bags are. I mean, really, almost all luggage you see is black and that truly is the same when it comes to laptop bags. I know that more than anything else, we look for functionality, but every now and again a little bit of color can’t do any harm. When I cam across the Burberry Laptop Messenger Bag, I thought, now *this* is something I’d like to carry around. I know the Burberry pattern can be a little much at time, but in the instance, I think it works wonderfully. The bag comes with brasstone hardware on the case along with a canvas shoulder strap and the flap has a double snap closure. And as always, I enjoy the interior slip, zip and cell phone pockets. Share with us what kind of laptop bag you carry around? I truly need a new one!

Salvatore Ferragamo may be known for shoes, but the new line of handbags has me swooning. Not just a little bit of love, but there is a heavy amount of lust, or yearning, of floating on cloud 9. Part of the problem that many of us face with Ferragamo handbags is that we do not see the full line, the entire array. If only there were the entire collection available at Saks or Neiman Marcus, I know the sales online would sky rocket.
The Ferragamo office in NYC decided to tempt Purse Blog in a way that is just wrong, sending us the Salvatore Ferragamo Oversized Carlotta Alligator Tote to review.
This handbag is a dream bag, a bag that I only could find in my dreams. Because the price makes it way out of my league and the dreamy alligator skin on such a large bag puts me into my dream of driving to our Hamptons home in our Morgan Aero 8. So without the Hamptons home, the Morgan 8, and the bag, I am left in reality. But I’d rather dream. This bag is a piece of art. But not just art, wearable art. That is the beauty of this handbag. It is not just a collector’s item, or an expensive item, or an art piece, it is functional. And I yearn for it.
So I said expensive, right? And I meant expensive. It is time to let you down a bit (and by a bit I mean a whole lot). The Salvatore Ferragamo Carlotta Tote will set you back $35,000. No, I did not get the comma wrong nor did I add an extra zero. But the price is to be expected. This is a HUGE bag. By oversized they truly mean oversized. And this is why I continued to say that this handbag is the perfect weekend getaway travel companion. The bag that you throw your Hermes scarves and resort items into and jet off for the weekend (in the Morgan 8 if I could!).
But the beauty of the bag speaks for itself. The shape can be seen from clutches to oversized totes from Ferragamo this season. The luscious silver alligator is super soft and smooshy, not highly structured or stiff at all. Vlad and I opened the box and stared. Stared at this bag as if we had hit the lotto jack pot. Really? A bag of this caliber was sitting in our house looking us in the eye, begging us to try it on, put it over my shoulder, and throw it in the car. I did all but throwing it in the car. But I wore this bag around the house. It could be an everyday bag, but this is truly more of a weekend getaway bag. I can only imagine pulling up to a resort or my second home as all the onlookers gawked and stared. Yes, they would, and again, I need to pinch myself because this just a dream.
Vlad loved photographing this bag. Everything about the details will not let you down, but then again, what else would you expect from Ferragamo? Ferragamo is known for the most perfectly fitting shoes (I only have one pair, but I ADORE them!). And now, Ferragamo is on my map for handbags. Forget their shoes, I shall go barefoot if this bag could ever be mine. Inquire at your local Ferragamo boutique. Also, you can buy Salvatore Ferragamo at Saks.
Edit: I found the estimated dimensions from Ferragamo, 20 inches long and 15 inches high

Have any of you begun to notice that you’re starting to think of the holiday season? Maybe while you are window shopping or browsing the web, something catches your eye and you think “hey, this would be perfect for so and so”. I know there are some people out there who begin shopping months in advance. Actually, Megs and my grandmother picks things up year-round and holds on to them until the holidays. While others of us, read: ME, wait until just about the last minute to shop. Well, I have to say, I saw the Alexander McQueen Elvie Python Tote and thought, “you know, this would be a great gift”. The tote is all the rage right now and has been seen on several celebs and socialites. And we all know how amazing it is to be able to sport one of the celeb or socialite favorites on your arm.
Let’s take a minute to talk about the tote itself. First of all, when I look at it, my heart is happy. I love the overall look and feel of the bag. I know I’ve said it before, and I am sure to say it again, but it truly is the best when at first glance a bag just really catches your eye. The dark green python leather couldn’t be accented more perfectly than it is with the gold-tone hardware. (To me, in these images, the tote looks black, but it is said to be dark green, so I’ll take their word.) I think the tote would be carried best in hand or resting mid-arm, but I guess the two handles could even fit on your shoulder if you really wanted it to. At the same time, don’t do that, you need to show off this gorgeous bag! The flap over the top and gold clasp really add to the beauty of the bag. Open up the tote and you will find a small zipped pocket and fabulous brown suede lining. More than anything, this bag screams elegance, grace and sophistication, but not in a stuffy way. Who wouldn’t love receiving this as a gift? I guess the only drawback is the price; buy through Net-a-Porter for $5,380.

Has anyone realized that Vlad and I have been MIA for the past two weeks? We attempted to connect to the online world, we attempted to chat with you all, but there was no internet to be found. We were on vacation in Ohio for two weeks, where Hurricane Ike hit. Ohio. Yes, a hurricane hit Ohio and actually took out massive amounts of power and downed massive amounts of trees. How that storm kept it together for that long, I have no idea. Just want to say I hope all affected by Ike, especially those in Texas, are on the path to recovery ok.
Being in Ohio at times feels like a different world. I can only explain it in a way that things are just slower. It is the Midwest, things work differently. But I love that and miss it. People go out of their way to say hello, ask about your day, and open up doors. I love it.
I forgot that there is a growing hipster crowd in Columbus. They are more hipster chic with designer denim and no-name tee’s. I loved being thrown back into the mix, and while I am not completely hipster, I am much more low key than a designer dressed gal. A perfect bag for the laid-back vibe would be the Gryson Olivia Pleated Drill Bag. We have covered Gryson before and I have been a fan, but I have found myself more drawn to Gryson recently. The combination on this bag, which is exclusively at Saks, is the perfect hipster look. The gathered blue Italian nylon is trimmed with calfskin leather. Sure, I would prefer this bag in all leather, buy nylon brings the price down and is always a great option for keeping a bag clean and sturdy. As much as black and blue can look like a bruise together, I ultimately love it on this bag! There are two buckled adjustable shoulder straps, double woven top handles, and a zip top closure. Also the outside features a single flap pocket with a zipper. Even though the outside features nylon, Gryson does not skimp on the inside and they line the bag with suede. Dimensions are 17″W X 9″H X 12″D. You know what, hipster-esque or not, I really adore this bag. Buy through Saks for $795.

[Often, when a fashion designer dies and his life's work is assessed, some insistent hyperbole is necessary before the death matters to anyone beyond his loyal band of ladies who spend their time dashing between luncheons and charity balls. Most modern women are not going to weep at the passing of a fashion designer whose heyday was some 30 years ago.

But this time, it's Yves Saint Laurent who has died. He passed away yesterday evening, at age 71, at his Paris home. And no exaggeration is required to explain the impact he has had on modern fashion. In the 1960s and '70s, when he was at the height of his influence, he brought popular culture, a mannish swagger, sexual power and ethnic awareness to fashion. He gave women a wardrobe that spoke of confidence and authority. He didn't give them armor for the boardroom as much as he gave them the sartorial equivalent of chutzpah, tough talk and bawdiness. He gave dames and broads their costumes.

Saint Laurent elevated youth culture and street style by equating it with the confections whipped up in a fancy atelier. And most important, he began fashion's steady march toward democracy and the dissolution of the industry's stultifying hierarchy.

Because of Saint Laurent, women's closets are filled with now-classic garments that have become the backbone of a wardrobe. Items such as the safari jacket and "le smoking" <del> a tuxedo </del> have become such standard parts of a woman's everyday life that it is difficult to remember a time when they did not exist. Avant-garde designers such as Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto have been influenced by Saint Laurent and the way in which he feminized menswear. Halston drew upon the sexual ease in a Saint Laurent garment.

While designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel championed the notion of women in trousers, it was Saint Laurent who sold the public on the idea. Saint Laurent put women in pants. It's as simple and as influential as that. Without him, how would our mind's eye see the authoritative ease expressed by Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton? That accomplishment alone would have been enough to secure him a place in history.

But Saint Laurent was not merely a part of fashion history, he was instrumental in writing the vast majority of it. He popularized the bohemian-chic sensibility that later went on to define the hippie aesthetic and its many artsy, grungy, hipster derivations. He welcomed so-called exotic and unorthodox influences into his work, such as the traditional prints of Africa and the folkloric costumes of Russia. He forged a relationship between fashion and the art world, most dynamically with his Mondrian dress of 1965. Without Saint Laurent, there would arguably be no Marc Jacobs, so greatly influenced by the work of Takashi Murakami, Stephen Sprouse and Richard Prince.

"Most people are lucky if they can do one thing, if they can make one major contribution," fashion historian Valerie Steele said last night. Saint Laurent's contributions could fill volumes.

But for all of his iconographic designs, for all the designers he influenced, his most enduring contributions have more to do with the way he transformed how our culture consumes fashion. He began his career in haute couture, taking over the famed French fashion house of Christian Dior in 1958. He was hailed as a prodigy then, as an enfant terrible as mischievous, rebellious and reckless as designers John Galliano and Alexander McQueen are considered today.

He founded his own house in 1962 with partner Pierre Bergé. Saint Laurent had a temperament as fragile as a hothouse flower and always seemed just on the verge of nervous collapse. He seemed burdened by creativity and overwhelmed by his success and responsibilities, even as he moved among a hard-partying crowd and appeared in his own advertisements (even posing naked to promote one of his fragrances).

He was one of fashion's first personalities to be defined as much by his own sexuality and extracurricular activities as by his work. He preceded Tom Ford and Calvin Klein in the transformation of fashion marketing into light porn.

In 1966, when he launched his Rive Gauche collection <del> a ready-to-wear line </del> he welcomed an entirely new stratum of society into the world of designer clothes. With that decision, he began the trickle-down effect in which designer fashion continues to become ever more accessible, so that now a shopper can go into Target and find a frock that has a designer aesthetic.

There was something profoundly democratic in the work of one of the fashion industry's most rarefied designers. He found inspiration in cultures that were not part of cafe society. And he celebrated the beauty of women who continue to struggle to find acceptance within fashion's narrowly defined aesthetics.

Those who worry about the lack of diversity in the fashion industry in 2008 can look back fondly to the 1970s, when Saint Laurent regularly used black models on his runway -- not as gimmicks in a collection that had been inspired by Africa but as representations of a kind of beauty he considered as valid and as enticing as any other.

Saint Laurent retired from ready-to-wear in 1998 and a few years later closed his couture house. By then, the Saint Laurent name was still a celebrated one within the industry and cause for young designers to swoon. They studied his work with the kind of attention that movie directors give to old Fellini, Kurosawa or Scorsese. But among the public, the name was equated with stodgy sharp-shouldered blazers, ostentatious colors and the frilly confections that defined mother-of-the-bride style.

A long line of designers have tried to reinvent his style and revive the Saint Laurent label for the 21st century. Alber Elbaz made a valiant effort, turning to such signature clothes from the archive as knickers. When Gucci Group bought the label in 1999, Tom Ford recut the tuxedo and resurrected both the African sensibility and the Asian fascination. He also gave a nod to the house's history of sexual provocation with a collection of see-through frocks that revealed the models' nipples, tinted blue. And now designer Stefano Pilati helms the house. He has turned his attention to the brand's famed tailoring and its historical emphasis on dramatic silhouettes. None of them, though, has been able to restore the house to its acclaimed position within the culture, and so far, none has been able to make it profitable.

Sell enough handbags and the money will come. But it's a rare feat when a designer can leave a legacy that not only changed fashion but transformed the way in which we see ourselves. It may not be enough to make a woman weep, but it certainly is enough to make her smile|http://www.btbnt.com|fr]
